This is where we started from - A 1992 Cherokee 4 door with 4.0 six cylinder
The reason we bought this car is over most others is it had never been wheeled hard or built and we wanted a blank canvas that was still straight. The first mod was to strengthen the frame.
We took 1/8th inch plate and bent it to fit as well as some dimple die holes for looks and strength.
We also got the adapter fabbed up that goes between the turbo 350 and the np231c. More pics to follow on this portion of the build. We also have some great axels for this thing compliments of mister Ziggler. Thanks jon for the HP44 front and 9in rear with 5.13 gears. Also picked up the 35 in. KM2s and got those mounted on rims. It will be linked front and rear and run Fox 2.0 air shocks. Stay tuned for more to come.  |

Josh wanted an auto for this rig and who could blame him. Larry was kind enough to donate a turbo 350 to the cause. Thanks Mud. We had the stock adapter off of a 700r4 but it was too long.
We needed an adapter that was only 1 inch instead of 2 1/2 inches. Since money is an issue we just decided to build our own from 6061 1 inch flat stock. We then added a 3/8 inch thick ring to this that would center the adapter in the tranny.
How do you mark where to drill the holes in the new plate that fits the tranny and the transfercase? We used gear marking paint to transfer where the holes were. 12 holes later and only 1 had to be enlarged a little, the other 11 fir perfectly the first time.
We used small allen head bolts to hold the small ring in place while I tig welded the ring to the adapter.
The tranny had an ear missing so we had to build a new one that was tig welded to the case and epoxy finished the bottom section where it got to close to a valve for welding.
Not to bad for 30 bucks in materials and 6 hrs of work. It was fun also. 
Josh scored some electric seats out of a Grand Cherokee off of Craigs List for $100.00. They fit snug but they do fit and feel great. 
Tomarrow we start trimming the fenders and installing the tranny and transfer case. Stay tuned and we will keep the pics coming. |

weld them lightning holes up... not doin much if you just weld it to the floor
and why not an AW4? just as strong as a TH350, has overdrive, and will bolt to the 4.0... |

Here is the result of a little fender trimming and the new meats
This should be the stance of the rig given the width of the new axles.
More to come this week for sure.

FYI tater those [lightning] holes are called dimple dies. They actually make the part lighter and stronger and are welded to the frame in three separate spots and will be tied into the roll cage as well. I personally think they look better than a flat plate also.
As for the tranny selection, everyone has an opinion on which is better, mine is based on running both the AW4 and turbo 350. I like the turbo 350 better and this one is already built with a deep sump and was in the lizard. The lizard couldn't kill it with a 4.3 v6 so I think a 4.0 straight 6 won't either. It also has a reverse valve body, Aluminum deep pan for better cooling and all the mods done to it for rock crawling. |

thats true.. im trying my best to NOT run a doubler.. 7.17s and a 4:1 in the dana 300 is as low as i can get without a box4rox and im still gunna have cooling problems with the AW4.. we'll see what i can come up with to keep 'er cool...
what will final drive ratio be with that setup?? do you att the 4:1 to the 7.17:1 to make 11.17:1 or multiply the 7.17 by 4??? which is 28.86:1... in overdrive though... dang...
research shows.. AW4 Ratios: 2.80 1st, 1.53 2nd, 1.00 3rd, 0.75 4th..
this is far to confusing lol i know you know how to figure it.. care to show me???? |

Josh's axels are 5.13 x tranny 3.0 x transfercase of 2.72 x torque converter at 1.5 equals crawl ratio of 62.8 to 1. Yours is 120.5 to 1 My Willys is 112 to 1 crawl ratio |

Today we got the rear main seal replaced and the oil leaks fixed
We also got the front and rear axles set to 102 inch wheel base and squared with each other. Thanks again Mud for the help.
Somebody is getting impatient and can't wait to play with this thing.

Well we got the front and rear axles under it today with the tires mounted up and it looks like everything is going to clear just fine.
This is ride height. We gave it a 1-1/2 rake forward just for looks because I like a little rake to any rig.
The Cherokee should end up with about 19-1/2 inches clear under the new skid plate. This is the first time I have built a Cherokee, but there is a ton of room under these rigs to tuck the tranny and transfercase up enough to make it flat if a person is so inclined. We like to have a 1 inch bend in the skid plate to help add strength so we actually ended up lowering the tranny to 1/2 inch below frame height and clocking the transfercase even with the bottom of the tranny. Wheel base is 102 inches. We will start the links tomorrow.

| looking great guys, will it be done in time for X-mas valley? If so with that wheel base it should do great in the dunes.and are you all going to repaint or leave it snow white? |

We should have it done for the Dunes and Groundhog. He plans on competing in the 35 inch class. We will re-piant the lower portion of the rig since it gets skids and fender flairs. I think it will have a 2 tone green and white paint scheme. |

| Man, I've been too busy for my own good. I've been working just under 50 hours a week, and I'm in school full time right now too, so I've been insanely busy. Every free minute I play with and take care of my kids, and I've worked every weekend since the end of November! I really want to get out with you guys again soon, but as of right now, I don't know when my next free time will be. I don't have any time to work on my own rig for the upgrades I planned, so I'm looking to actually get rid of my Jeep to replace it with something else that may be closer to what I was planning to build. So, if anyone knows someone that wants an '67 cj-5, PM me and let me know! Good luck with the build Rock, can't wait to see updated pics. |
